How much is your data worth?
The real answer to this question may surprise you. Consider how much
time it would take you to re-collect and re-enter all of your information,
then calculate our your staff wages for that time, double it because
those staff should've been working productively towards company profits
and you're starting to get a clearer picture.
To go further, often much information cannot be re-collected. You
may be fined if you cannot produce tax-related accounting information.
You cannot easily forcast future trends without past data. Warrant
registrations, customer contacts, debtor information, staff time sheets
and accumulated leave entitlements .. the list goes on.
Traditionally, computers use tape drives to backup their data. Statisitcally,
more than 50% of tape backups are discovered to have failed when they
are required for a crucial data restore. Often this is because not
enough data was saved, or not the right data.
ParadigmIT believe that one of the most robust and reliable methods
of backup is with a completely separate computer across a network
and onto a Hard Disk Drive.
Swap the Hard Disk Drives in the backup machine as often as you feel
necessary on whatever rotation scheme you feel necessary (always allowing
for an off-site copy) and your safety can be seen the the following
scenarios:
Situation:
| |
You
have lost a file or folder for any reason including data corruption,
hardware failure, virus or user error. |
Solution:
| |
Your
authorized personnel copy the lost files/folders from the backup
to the operating file server. |
Situation:
| |
Your
file server ceases functioning for reasons including hardware
failure, major virus, stolen or removed. |
Solution:
| |
Either
fix/replace your primary server and restore the full backup
contents or re-configure your backup machine to become your
primary server for the interim period while primary server is
down. |
Situation:
| |
Both
File Server and backup computer are lost - such as when your
office has burnt down or all equipment stolen. |
Solution:
| |
Purchase
any reasonable PC-level computer from your local Computer Store
and install and configure the off-site backup drive as your
file server. In most cases, we can have your file server back
online faster than you can get a workstation to connect to it. |
