To better demonstrate the
kind of successful and useful solutions that ParadigmIT can provide,
we would like to present several case studies to illustrate the
reasoning and capabilities of ParadigmIT.
Here are summary case studies for Fishing Western
Australia and Modnet Internet Services.
Case Study #1:Fishing
Western Australia - Management System Development
Fishing Western Australia (FishingWA) run a very successful Web
E-zine built from a hobby in computing and a passion for fishing.
After 18 months of operation, they were showing substantial growth
and success, but were heavily burdened by the administrative overhead
of membership tracking, increased web site maintenance and the lack
of flexibility and autonomy because they were relying on a third
party for web hosting. Growth was slowing significantly because
the effort to expand was increasing
ParadigmIT suggested two significant additions to their business
processes and subsequently implemented them.
Firstly, in place of hosting their growing web site on an ISP's
server that also server many other sites, we built a custom Internet
Server and co-located it at an ISP. The custom server meant that
FishingWA now had full control over all the aspects of their web
service including full access to logs, managing their own domain
information and allowing for easy sub-domain creation, an unlimited
amount of email accounts and a flexible account structure and a
significant increase in reliability because there were no other
parties "making changes" to the server that weren't relevant
to FishingWA but could affect their level of service.
Probably the most important bonus to this move came afterwards when
the requirement to extend the web site to be more interactive allowed
complete flexibility for software development.
The second major contribution by ParadigmIT to the improvement of
the FishingWA system is a part of this development.
A huge amount of human resources on a daily basis were pumped into
managing subsciption membership and the correspondence and checking
that goes with it. ParadigmIT took the existing manual documentation
and communications systems that FishingWA were using and built a
"back end" to the web site that nearly completely removes
the requirement for human interaction to manage their growing subscription
base.
After implementation, the time required on a daily basis to manage
subscribers droped to 3% of it's original, freeing up time for almost
everyone in the company to focus on improvement, development and
service.
Total capital outlay for this development: $12,000.
I'm happy to say that the growth FishingWA picked up picked up significantly
and are again expanding and improving in leaps and bounds.
Case Study #2:
Modnet Internet
- Emergency Response and ISP Support
Modnet Internet (Modnet) is a regional ISP in Geraldton, W.A. They
are a modest company when compared in the ISP industry, but very
successful in the context of their situation and geography.
Modnet saw the benefits of using the "free"
GNU/Linux
for their systems early in their development and all their systems
bar one.
On one fine day in 2001, their system's security were cracked and
they had to do something about it fast, but the nearest help was
in Perth and their newest support comany (ParadigmIT) were untested.
Have ParadigmIT done this sort of thing before? Well, no, not really.
At least, not under Australian conditions
Can you do it? Yes, of course! The difficult or the impossible are
only things we haven't tried at before.
Geraldton is a 4.5 hour drive from Perth. ParadigmIT were on-site
in 5 hours.
A day later all the systems had been re-built, tested clean and
data migrated from the old systems to the new. Down-time was minimized
and the newer, more secure software systems have been running happily
ever since.
All the normal ISP services successfully restored and secured including
WWW, SMTP, POP3, NNTP, logging, DNS, monitoring, ARP, RADIUS, routing
and administration tools.
This successful emergency response has lead to an enduring and respectful
relationship between Modnet and ParadigmIT where together we have
successfully evolved services and infrastructure including IP re-allocation,
migrating upstream providers and routing, client sub-servers and
more.
For each problem that arises and solution that is implemented, the
communication between parties is such that the technical ability
of both parties has been increasing steadily resulting in improved
service and services for customers. We believe that one day the
relationship between Modnet and ParadigmIT will end - not because
there will be better support, but because Modnet's own abilities
are increasing rapidly with the help of ParadigmIT and the amount
of support reuired will become trivial.
